Resignation of George Allen

On Monday August 2, 2010, the Alumni Association received this e-mail from long-time alumni coordinator George Allen.

To the Graduates of Southeastern:

It is with great sadness that I am announcing my departure from the position of coordinator of alumni activities at Southeastern Regional High School. For the past 10 years it has been my pleasure to meet so many of you at the reunions, open houses, picnics and other alumni events.

The School Committee of Southeastern has been reducing the amount for this program for the last few years, and this year indicated that they might want to give the amount in my contract directly to the Southeastern Alumni Association, headed by Louise (Burke) Cote (77). In a recent meeting (June 14) of the executive committee of this association, (3 members) voted to terminate my connection to the Southeastern Alumni Association.

Unfortunately these actions affect the 8 classes that have been working with me for this year’s reunions, as well as any other future reunions. I can not guarantee that these reunions will take place as planned, as no one, from the Alumni Association, has had any significant impute for the last nine reunions. I will give you Louise’s, and the Chairlady of the Southeastern School Committee (Mindy Kempner), E-mail addresses below for you to get your own answer to this question.

Although not a graduate of Southeastern, I had the fortune to serve on the first planning committee, and the very first School Committee that built our wonderful School. Plus when I came to work 14 years ago as a substitute teacher, I realized the need for expanded alumni activities and started all that has followed. I am very proud of Southeastern, thus the sadness mentioned at the start of this message.

Louise (Burke) Cote:

This letter contained some errors. Alumni Association president Louise (Burke) Cote sent this reply:

To George Allen's Mailing List:
I accept George's resignation as Alumni Coordinator. I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge George's service to this association for the past 10 years.

I want to clear up one item George mentioned in his letter: while the Executive Committee did indeed meet in late May and vote to terminate the position of Alumni Coordinator, due to our pending incorporation and strained finances, the overall board asked that we delay the termination until after we hold a discussion on the topic at our meeting scheduled for August 17th. George's decision to resign was entirely his.

As for the reunions, George had told me that there are two active committees planning and finding classmates. I do not expect that these committees will disband, and I anticipate a great time to be had by all attendees.

I also want to remind everyone that the Alumni Association does not report to the School Committee, so calling or emailing them would be highly inappropriate. I have added Ms Kempner, Superintendent Lopes, and high school Principal David Wheeler to this reply. And since they were not included in this mailing, I have also added the current SRAA Board of Directors.

In the meantime, we will continue with our two committees dedicated to run their reunions, new board members to keep this organization alive, and pending incorporation as a bona fide 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit charitable organization.

Louise R. (Burke) Cote
SRVTHS 1977 / SRAA President
